After the establishment of CIDER House for men, SCADP addressed a woman’s greatest barrier to treatment –the lack of childcare –via the opening of Foley House in 1985. Foley House was one of the first women's recovery programs in the nation to accept women and their minor children. The program is funded through contracts with the L.A. County Health Department, Alcohol and Drug Program Administration. Foley House has a capacity of 36 women and children.
The program is located in residential Whittier, across the street from an elementary school which our child residents can attend. The treatment facility comprises a main house utilized for program and social activities, surrounded by five smaller cottages where our residents and their children live. Foley House helps women plan their recovery and discharge, and provides needs assessment, individual and group counseling, substance abuse/HIV/STD/parenting education, life skills training, case management and linkage to social services. All treatment services are supervised by the agency medical director. Children at Foley House have their own recovery program which uses age-appropriate counseling techniques to help them understand and recover from the trauma of family substance abuse.
The Foley House Auxiliary lends support to the program and assists the house in the purchase of needed items for the house. Throughout the year, the auxiliary keeps Foley House supplied with ceramic crafts materials, "Big Books", and cash for baby shower gifts. During the holiday season the auxiliary provides trees for all the cottages, toys, and a holiday party. The Foley House Auxiliary also provides spending money for the mothers for school clothes during the year.
