CIDER House was the first residential recovery program established by Southern California Alcohol & Drug Programs, and comprises three separate programs:
• non-medical detoxification (3-7 days);
• primary recovery care (30-180 days) and;
• a transitional living shelter (up to one year long).
Named for its work of Crisis, Intervention, Detox, Education and Recovery, CIDER House opened in 1975 as a transitional housing program providing shelter homeless adult men recovering from substance abuse. In 1978, a full treatment program, CIDER House Primary, was added via a contract with the County of Los Angeles Alcohol and Drug Program Administration. The CIDER House continuum of care was completed with the addition of a detoxification component in 1978 -- the first suburban detox program in L.A. County. Today, CIDER House is one of the County's largest men’s treatment programs, offering a static capacity of more than 100 beds. The program serves homeless and low-income adult men, 18 years of age and older. CIDER House includes male Cal-WORKs clients among its participants, and works with non-custodial parents to build educational/vocational readiness which will help men support their children financially.
CIDER programs are located within two separate buildings on the grounds of Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk. This space is leased from the State of California at reduced cost, making it possible to provide residential care to many more men than would otherwise be viable. Buildings 209 and 211 on hospital grounds have housed the CIDER Detox and Primary Care programs since the original building was damaged in the 1987 Whittier earthquake. The State of California provided Emergency Shelter and Mc Kinney Federal monies (via the L.A. County Community Development Commission) to remodel this building as a permanent home for CIDER House programs. Originally constructed in 1919, the Detox/Primary has a new industrial kitchen, remodeled bathrooms and showers with handicapped access, forced air and heating, as well as new floors, carpet and wallpaper.
CIDER House Detox provides non-medical detoxification services within a bio-psycho-social treatment modality, supervised by the agency’s M.D. Medical Director. Static capacity of the Detox program is 24 beds. For many participants, detox is the front door to recovery from substance addiction, and many of our detox residents go on to complete all three CIDER House components. This three to seven day program offers shelter, nutritious meals, 24 hour detox supervision, as well as alcohol and drug education, introduction to 12 Step support groups and referral to needed social services.
