The Awakenings programs were established in November, 1988 to provide substance abuse treatment for Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons. Our outpatient component, located at the residential site in Whittier, is six months to one year in length and delivers services entirely in American Sign Language. The Awakenings Outpatient Program provides needs assessment, treatment and discharge planning, case management for social services linkage, individual, group and family counseling, 12 Step support groups and social/recreational activities. To coordinate services, Awakenings maintains a close relationship with the Greater Los Angeles Council on Deafness and other agencies in California which serve Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons.
