Hans Sauer, Ph.D., J.D., is Associate General Counsel for Intellectual Property with the Biotechnology Industry Organization in Washington, D.C. Dr. Sauer began his scientific career as a postdoctoral fellow at Genentech, Inc., in South San Francisco, working on molecular mechanisms of cell death and tissue repair in the central nervous system, and as a research scientist at Guilford Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Baltimore, overseeing studies on the pharmacology of age-related neurological disorders. Subsequently, he held various positions in the legal department of Guilford Pharmaceuticals Inc., being responsible for patent prosecution, clinical research health information privacy, and sales and marketing legal compliance. Prior to joining BIO, Dr. Sauer was Chief Patent Counsel for MGI Pharma, Inc. in Bloomington, MN. Dr. Sauer holds a Master’s degree in animal physiology from the University of Ulm in his native Germany, a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Lund, Sweden, and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.
