 An African Tradition...CALL & RESPONSE

THE
CALL FROM THE CONGO

·        In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Central Africa, the Luba ethnic group is targeted for ethnic cleansing in the Katanga region.

·         The first expulsion occurred in 1961-1962. The second expulsion in 1993.   They were forced to go back to the province of origin which was not ready to receive such an enormous number of people. The Oriental Kasai province was overwhelmed with the new arrivals.  Some arrived by train in Mwene Ditu, a destitute crossroads. Many died on the way to the refuge camps.

·       There were many children with no parents or relatives. These children were scattered throughout the Eastern Kasai province, which did not have schools or finances to pay for their education. These children continue to show a greatwillingness to learn!
  • Father Jacques Kabengele, school principal, sounded the SOS to search for donors to support the education of the children.
  • Dr. Musau Wakabongo contacted Lillian Perry to solicit support from The PhiLill Foundation in 2007.

THE RESPONSE

FROM THE PHILILL FOUNDATION

Goals

To bring hope to the refugee kids and allow them to develop their minds through education, because they are the leaders of tomorrow, and the hope for peace in the DRC.

 Objectives

1.   Finance the educations of the elementary school children and youth at the Abbe Lazare Mpoyi School Complex at the cost of $6.00/student per year.

2.   Heighten awareness throughout the world about the needs among the children and youth (and orphans in particular) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo through ongoing information to PhiLill Foundation donors and Phil Perry fans

3.   Provide technology (cameras, hardware & software) to videotape, photograph, and document the needs, and progress of the school and its students, and strengthen Father Jacques Kabengele’s ability to insure oversight to supporters, including the PhiLill Foundation.

4.   Provide payment for shipping costs of cameras, hardware, software, and educational materials sent to the school in the DRC.

Target Audience:

·        Elementary school children at Abbe Lazare Mpoyi School Complex in Bena Kabamba (Oriental Kasai)

Expected Results:
  • Increased enrollment and retention of promising students
  • Development of leadership potential among the youth
  • Identification of students who show promise in the sciences, which is the hope of the people in their quest for econmic self-reliance and dignity
