Blacksmithing classes
Learn the art of blacksmithing from professionals who have created many outstanding works in the Northwest and the nation. Many hand forged items are on display in the studio for sale to the public. Talk with the blacksmiths about any custom architectural features or items you may need. Class is two hours. $60 per class. Limited to 4 students per day. Classes can be scheduled for 10AM or 1PM. Please pay the blacksmith on arrival, no credit cards. However, you must register to hold a place by calling 503-272-3301. 10AM till 4PM, or leave a message. Students must wear 100% cotton clothing, and closed toed boots or shoes w/ socks.

Darryl Nelson. Owner of the Meridian Forge in Eatonville, Washington, Darryl has over 30 years of blacksmithing experience. Artist Blacksmith Association of North America (ABANA) demonstrator for over 20 years. Founding member and former president of NWBA, Northwest Blacksmiths Association.
Darryl can also be commissioned for architectural or art pieces. The blacksmith shop usually has many hand forged pieces for sale. Darryl's work may also be seen at the Mountain Gallery located in The Mount Hood Cultural Center & Museum. (museum hours, 10AM till 4PM Thursday through Sunday.

This small group class, limited to 8, will include both studio and plein-air painting in the Mt. hood area. First we will paint outdoors, weather permitting, or looking through our studio windows. After lunch critique, we will study how to bring a painting indoors, evaluate it in studio lighting, and make the changes that make the painting work. About 5 hours of painting time each day! I will demo in oils. All media welcome. Location and schedule will be e-mailed to you with your registration confirmation.

Watercolor Sketching:

This class is planned for the new painter but I welcome painters at all levels. This is an on location watercolor sketching class and is designed to introduce you to technical and to compositional matters. I will cover the techniques of graduated washes, glazes, wet-in-wet, and we'll use salt, rags, alcohol, sponges--you name it. Each class begins with a demonstration and then you paint with individual assistance. Since a new location is featured each session, please attend the first session. At registration you may pick up a supply list. Additional supplies will be discussed at our first at the MHCCM Art Cabin.
3 sessions planned, 10 AM to 2 PM Tuition: $125.00 , or $65 per day (must attend 1st day)

Jan received her training in metal jewelry at William Holland School of Lapidary Arts in Young Harris, Georgia. This winter Jan studied under Maggie Roschyk in Mesa, Arizona.
Bangle Bracelet

Create a one of a kind bracelet using a variety of semi-precious stones and glass beads.
Learn to make Sterling Silver 'eye pins', spiral bangles and 'caged' beads.
All equipment and materials are provided, including Sterling Silver toggle clasp and jump rings.
Classes may be scheduled with a 2 person minimum.

Learn to wire wrap a cabochon into an elegant, one of a kind pendant. Some experience in wire wrap will make for a more enjoyable class experience. We will work with copper wire to learn sculpture techniques and then work with Sterling Silver wire.
*Private classes may be scheduled on your date of choice, with 2 person minimum. 2 week advance paid registration required. Perfect "friends get away" on Mount Hood.
Beginners wire wrapping classes available on request. 2 student minimum. We will start from scratch to learn the begining techniques for wire wrap. Inquire as to available dates and costs.
2 day, Beginning Glass Bead Making & Wire Jewelry Class!

This is a unique opportunity to learn the art of making glass beads at the torch using Bullseye Glass, and finishing them as a piece of wearable art for all to see!
Day One: Learn to create beautiful glass beads using a surface mix, Minor Burner torch and Bullsyeye glass. Included in class is safety, studio set up, and glass properties.
Day Two: Take your new beads out of the annealing kiln and remove from mandrels, learn to clean and prep. Then upstairs to the Jewelry Table! Don't just hide your first beads away in a drawer...wear them! Create a unique piece of jewelry to wear proudly. Findings and additional jewelry components supplied. This class is an Arts Cabins exclusive. No refunds after one week before schduled class date. Excellant value for your arts / jewelry making dollar. Usually only found as individual classes.

10Am till 4PM. One day 'getting started' class! $150 per student. Must pay full amount at registration.
Learn to make glass beads using the Minor Burner, surface mix torch, and Bullseye Glass.
Also included in your instruction: Safety, studio set up, types of glass. In this one day class you will not get too far into decoration, although beginning techniques will be taught. Beads will be sent to students as one day class does not allow students to leave w/ beads and allow annealing time in kiln.

2 day Beginning Glass Bead Making:
Beginning Mid June through August 2 day advance registration. 2 student minimum. Repeats in October.
10AM till 4PM daily. 1 hour lunch. $200 per student. Full amount due at registration
Same as one day beginner class, however students will explore further surface decorations on second day. Beads from day one will be taken from kiln and removed from mandrels and cleaned to take home on second day. Beads created on second day will be mailed to students. All tools, saftey glasses, and materials supplied. Arts Cabins is equipped w/ ventilation system in glass studio.

Flameworking for Electroforming!

Janelle Zorko has been involved with glass for eight years. An avid glassblower since 1998, Janelle eventually took a borosilicate glass sculpture class at Pratt and then a series of beadmaking & glass sculpture classes. Janelle has studied with Larry Brickman, Lucio Bubacco, Kimberly Affleck and others. Janelle's hot glass history shows in her tiny flameworked perfume bottles and vessels. She excels at organic beadmaking and is known for her series of electroformed leaves and flowers on glass beads.
Flameworking for Electroforming is a two-day course which covers the basic process of electroforming. In addition, students will learn how to create base beads and bottles for later embellishment. The class instruction will include sculpted bicones, tabular base beads, hollow perfume bottles and goddess beads. Students will learn various techniques for adding interest to their electroforming by using micro beads, jeweler’s wax and natural objects. Finally, various patinas and finishing techniques will cap off the class.Students must bring several of their own beads for electroforming. These beads should be larger than 1 inch in height or width. These beads can be lentils, bicones, tabs or other sculpted beads.
Day 1 –
10:00AM - Studio Safety – A brief discussion on studio safety and an orientation to the facilities and the warm shop.
Demo - Electroforming Basics – We will learn the basics of electroforming and will learn a few different adornment techniques.
Students will paint their own bead in preparation for electroforming.
Demo – Sculpted Bicone Bead – Students will learn to create a bicone especially designed towards maximizing the effects of electroforming.

Demo – Tabs with Interest – Students will learn to go beyond the basic tabular shape.

Demo – Goddess Beads – Students will learn to make an “earthy” goddess bead that lends itself well to electroforming.

Day 2 –
10:00am – Bead cleaning and review
Electroforming check-in – See how those beads are shaping up. Troubleshoot any problems.
Demo – Hollow Bead – Students will learn to make a hollow bead – specifically for the experience of practicing “coil potting” or “winding on”.

Demo - End of Mandrel Perfume Bottle Demo – We will learn how to make perfume bottles at the end of a mandrel to include feet and stoppers.

Demo – Using jeweler’s wax to create handles on the wound method bottles we have created.
