| The History of Mission: Literacy
Mission: Literacy EIN Number: 34-2027295
Mission: Literacy was established in November, 2004 as a New Mexico Non-Profit Corporation.
We received our 501(c)(3) status in June, 2005, retroactive to November, 2004.
Mission: Literacy grew from its founder’s Master Thesis, completed in May, 2001, which was a proposal for a new non-profit in southern Bernalillo County, NM with the purpose of teaching the English language in all aspects.
Tutoring began in October, 2004 at the local community center. In September, 2005, a store-front was obtained and we opened for a larger number of students and more tutors.
We teach and tutor English as a Second Language, Basic Literacy, Family Literacy (soon), pre-GED and GED preparation in Math, Citizenship, and Computer Skills classes.
Instructional services in English are primarily provided to those who function at the National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) Levels I and II. This service is provided without charge to the individual clients.
Corporate clients may be charged a flat fee for materials and supplies for workplace literacy classes. In addition, the organization will aid and encourage individuals, groups or organizations desiring to increase literacy through volunteer programs.
The organization may provide tutoring to its clients in other subjects such as History, Math, and others where the need to read English is required.
Mission: Literacy is a rapidly growing program. We need your help by volunteering or by donations.
