WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Assessing The Risk of Breast Cancer Recurrence- The  ONCOTYPE DX Test/The Estronex Test - Oncotype DX test uses the unique gene expression profile of a patient's tumor to assess the likelihood of recurrence and which type of chemotherapy will give the most benefit. The Estronex Test measures the ratio of two types of estrogen; one that is protective against breast cancer, and one that is cancer promoting. Learn how these tests can give you valuable decision-making information.

Breast Cancer Detection and Follow-up- When breast cancer is detected early by self-exam, mammography and/or other imaging techniques, there are more choices of treatments available and a greater chance of survival. Learn about the available detection choices, when they are used and how they work.

Creating A Treatment Program for the Whole Person - An integrative cancer program should combine the best conventional treatment with scientifically based complementary therapies that help relieve symptoms, enhance immunity and reduce stress. This workshop addresses how to evaluate therapies that are helpful in recovery and risk reduction.

Emerging Issues in Breast Cancer Research and Drug Development: An Advocacy Perspective - Are we making real progress in treating breast cancer? What barriers are there to the development of targeted therapies? What might we face if new drugs are brought to market more quickly, with less evidence? In this workshop we will discuss the pressing issues that impact healthcare policy and drug development today.

Herbs and Supplements for Cancer and Cancer Risk Reduction - Certain herbs and supplements have been found to have anti-tumor activity in laboratory studies and may reduce the risk of cancer, recurrence and improve your health during treatment. This workshop will explore those herbs and supplements that have proven helpful and show you how to use them effectively.

How the Breast is Affected by Toxins - Substantial evidence indicates that many chemicals in our environment may alter the risk for development of disease, including breast cancer. We will explore the ways that some of these substances may alter breast development, and later risk for cancer and talk about strategies to reduce exposures to these chemicals.

Hormones and Health - Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate everything that happens in our bodies. Natural hormones can be thought of as the life giving force that controls our physical, mental and emotional well being and have profound effects on the functioning of the immune system and the entire body. Learn the intricacies of the endocrine system and how you can balance hormones for optimal health.

Iodine Deficiency and Breast Disease - U.S. Iodine consumption has decreased by 50% in the last 30 years as breast cancer rates soar. Cultures consuming the highest levels of iodine maintain the lowest rates of  breast cancer. Researchers are examining how iodine deficiency functions in breast disease as well as thyroid and ovarian disease. Learn how patients and doctors are exploring new ways to test and treat iodine deficiency.

Living with Advanced Breast Cancer: a Conversation with Musa Mayer - As new treatments have become available for metastatic breast cancer, women are living longer and better with the disease. Share your concerns and questions with the author of Advanced Breast Cancer: A Guide to Living with Metastatic Disease. The workshop will focus on helping women with advanced breast cancer understand their disease, its treatments and how to get the best supportive care.

Nutrition for Wellness and Cancer Prevention - Research has shown a link between healthy eating and the prevention of cancer and other diseases that plague modern society. Learn how to improve your health during cancer treatment and reduce your risk of cancer recurrence by making healthier food choices on a daily basis.

Strategies For Wellness:Yoga, Meditation and Massage - Yoga, meditation and massage have positive effects on the immune system and are beneficial for stress reduction, pain management and relaxation. Yoga stretches and strengthens the body; Meditation helps calm and focus the mind; Massage relaxes, and reduces stress. Experience and put into practice these varied strategies for wellness.

The Latest Developments in Breast Cancer Treatment and Risk Reduction - Tremendous progress is being made on improving diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Moving toward new strategies in preventing breast cancer needs to be our highest priority. Learn about areas of promising research with the ultimate goal towards providing personalized approaches for both prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Hear updated information and results on the breast cancer-pesticide-pcb study of Hudson Valley women.

CLOSING PLENARY- The Mind-Body Connection-- The mind and body are intricately linked and continuously communicate in extraordinary ways. We will close our conference with discussion and imagery designed to guide us to peace and healing.
