"We the People" State Winners Advance to National Competition in Washington, D.C.

The nationally recognized We the People, a project of the Center for Civic Education, is funded by the U.S. Department of Education by act of Congress.It is designed to provide students with an understanding of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and to promote civic competence and responsibility. The curriculum begins in lower school and culminates each year in the high school national simulated congressional hearing competition in Washington, D.C.
This month the Louisiana state competition was held at the Jefferson Parish Courthouse in Gretna. After six rounds of competition, George Allan's team from John Ehret High School won the honor to represent Louisiana in Washington D.C. this April.

Mark Your Calendars! Teachers Summer Institute and Order in the Court Coming this July, 2009.

Order in the Court coming in mid-July immediately followed by the annual Summer Institute.
Order in the Court is a program designed to provide teachers with exposure to State and Federal Court processes where the educators are taught directly by members of the Louisiana Judiciary. The annual Summer Institute is a professional development program with workshops and curriculum development. Expenses are paid and attendees are eligible to recieve a stipend, a free set of textbooks and a teacher's guide. Enrollment is limited.

Nominations for the Student "Civics in Action Award" Are Being Accepted.

Help the LALCE recognize a Louisiana middle or high school student who exemplifies what it means to be an engaged citizen. Do you know a student who has made a difference or an improvement of the quality of life in their school, home, or community through the use of civic engagement?
The award recipient will be recognized at the Louisiana State Bar Association's Annual Meeting to be held in San Destin, Florida in June, 2009. Deadline Is March 30th.

| Deadlines Extended for 2009 High School Essay, YouTube Video Contests |
The LSBA's Young Lawyers Section has extended the submission deadline to Friday, February 20th, for the 2009 Louisiana High School Essay Contest and first-ever YouTube video contest. High school students should select three objects that symbolize American culture and explain the reasons for their choices.
