Introducing the Africa Environmental Watch (AEW), Inc.

Bowie, Maryland, September 18, 2008: The leadership of Liberia Environmental Watch (LEW), Inc. is pleased to introduce the Africa Environmental Watch (AEW), Inc. AEW was borne out of the need to have an umbrella organization for Africa that will advocate concerns of the environmental problems confronting Africa. As an off-shoot of LEW, AEW will embody and expand upon concepts and approaches adopted by LEW in fostering environmental educational awareness in Africa. In this regard, LEW and all other environmental organizations in other African countries will serve as independent functional subsets under the Africa Environmental Watch, Inc.

The topic “environment” is not one that has ever gained public attention in the political machinery in most African countries. Liberia is no exception to such phenomenon. Yet, there is a failure to realize that the environment factors are responsible for over 68 percent of deaths in sub-Sahara Africa. From poor water and air quality, unsanitary conditions, deforestation, drought, malaria, erosion and factors, these have threatened human lives and resulted in the sharp decline of life expectancy. Equal concern surrounds environmental human right protection for residents amidst these obvious environmental threats. Some of the aforementioned environmental problems contribute to climate change that leads Global Warming. Therefore, Africa’s participation in these global environmental initiatives is imperative and critical to ensuring sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction in Africa.

The Africa Environmental Watch, just as LEW has done, will continue to champion issues of environmental concerns that focus on eco-preservation, conservation of natural resources, and protection of public health. Interestingly, the environmental problems facing Liberia or any country in the region are a replica of those facing almost all African countries. These problems constitute a threat to trans-boundary commerce, health, and economic development. Therefore, designing collective approaches and finding a lasting solution to these problems requires a collective continental Effort.

Note therefore, that all international events or programs undertaking annually by LEW will now be under the auspices of the AEW. Against this backdrop, the Africa Environmental Watch (AEW) is organizing the Second Annual Environmental Conference on Africa. This event is scheduled to be held November 21st & 22nd at Bowie State University under the general theme, “Environmental Education and Action for a Healthy Africa”. Africa must wake to these environmental challenges.
