Post Environmental Conference Briefing and Fundraiser
The Liberia Environmental Watch, Inc.recently concluded a successful National Environmental Health Conference (NEHC) in commemoration of World Environmental Day. The Conference was held in June this year at the University of Liberia. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia organized the official World Environmental Day event, in which LEW participated at the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) in Margibi County, Liberia.
The general state of the environment of Liberia remains a critical national challenge. Most communities in Liberia, particularly, in Monrovia and its environs still remain unsanitary. There have been lots of discussions about remedies to the environmental problems in the country, but these are only on the papers, with little or no practical actions. Thus, the central problem posed by the unsanitary environment to public health has yet to yield the anticipated result. Environmental health problems emanating from water, air and land pollution is responsible for about 75% of deaths, while life expectancy of circa 45 years continues to decline.
Even as the government embarks on the much discussed Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS), several key government functionaries have yet to consider that the success of the PRS will be derived from a healthy national population and a productive human resource base that is groomed in a healthy environment. That is why the environment remains critical to20these programs, for which government should give its unrestricted attention.
In this regard the Liberia Environmental Watch continues to sharpen the debate on the environment in Liberia. LEW will continue to heighten this debate in order to galvanize the needed forms of support from the Liberian political machinery in saving the environment, hence saving precious lives.
