ICC’s Quarterly Aperitivo Culturale – Thursday March 26th, 2009 @ 6:00PM
Wine, appetizers and a presentation on the Sanremo Music Festival
Little Italy Spaghetteria, 1953 India St San Diego, CA 92101
Aperitivo - from the Latin aperire (to open) - used to be an alcoholic beverage consumed before dinner, with ancient medicinal origins as a concoction to cure inappetence.
These days in Italy, Aperitivo is used to define first and foremost a social happening, a moment of relaxation where people exit the work mode, meet up with friends, chat while enjoying a drink (alcoholic or not) and some appetizers before dinner, which usually happens later on in the night.
How could we not introduce our friends to this wonderful Italian ritual? And what could we do to make it even better? We decided
to add some culture to the happening, thus the Aperitivo Culturale was born.
This quarter’s Aperitivo Culturale will feature a presentation on the Sanremo Music Festival, a very popular song contest held yearly at the Ariston Theater in Sanremo, Liguria since 1951. The internationally notable song "Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu", also known as "Volare", was performed at this festival for the first time by Domenico Modugno in 1958. The festival is so popular in Italy that it is often referred to simply as "Il Festival". Come to see who won this year’s contest and learn about the Italian contemporary music scene!
This quarter’s event will be held on March 26th at 6:00PM at:
Little Italy Spaghetteria
1953 India St
San Diego, CA 92101

Invisible Cities: A Literary Journey through Italy
Thursday, March 19 at 6:00-8:00 PM at the ICC
Tuition: $15 (buy 2 lectures for $25)
In Invisible Cities (Le Citta’ Invisibili), Italian author Italo Calvino uses glorious, lyrical passages to tell the imaginary story of Marco Polo’s travels though brilliant, ephemeral cities. An argument has been made that all of Calvino’s cities are Italian cities. Discover this evocative book- and the poetry of imagination -though photographs and art by an Italian artist and poet. Travel the wondrous cities and sights of the Italian Peninsula and acquaint yourself with Calvino’s strongest muse: Italy.
“When a man rides a long time through wild regions, he feels the desire for a city. Finally he comes to Isidora, a city where the buildings have spiral staircases encrusted with spiral seashells, where perfect telescopes and violins are made, where the foreigner hesitating between two women always encounters a third, where cockfights degenerate into bloody brawls among the bettors. He was thinking of all these things when he desired a city. Isidora, therefore, is the city of his dreams: with one difference. The dreamed-of city contained him as a young man: he arrives at Isidora in his old age. In the square there is the wall where the old men sit and watch the young go by; he is seated in a row with them.
Desires are already memories.”

Nefarious Crimes, Contested Justice
Illicit Sex and Infanticide in the Republic of Venice, 1557–1789
This captivating history exposes a clandestine world of family and community secrets—incest, abortion, and
infanticide—in the early modern Venetian republic. With the keen eye of a detective, Joanne M. Ferraro follows the
clues in individual cases from the criminal archives of Venice and reconstructs each one as the courts would have
done according to the legal theory of the day. Ferraro gives voice to field workers, spinners, grocers, servants, concubines,
midwives, physicians, and apothecaries who gave evidence to the courts. Nefarious Crimes also traces shifting
attitudes toward illegitimacy and paternity from the late sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries.
Author Information: Joanne M. Ferraro is a professor of history at San Diego State University and has written widely on the history of family and sexual relations in early modern Italy. She is the author of Marriage Wars in Late Renaissance Venice.

ICC in collaboration with San Diego Italian Film Festival presents:
FREE Italian Film Mini Series
Every first Thursday of the month at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Baboa Park (MoPA)
These films are known here as “Spaghetti Westerns” but in Italy as “Westerns all’Italiana”. All three are directed by Sergio Leone and star Clint Eastwood, with music by Ennio Morricone.
The Good the Bad and the Ugly - August 7, 7:00pm MoPA
Free Admission

In the early 60’s, a then obscure director, Sergio Leone, was given $200,000 and a load of leftover film stock and told to make a Western. With a script based on Akira Kurosawa's samurai epic Yojimbo, an American TV actor named Clint Eastwood, a music composer named Ennio Morricone, and a cameraman named Massimo Dallamano, Leone made Per un Pugno di Dollari -- A Fistful of Dollars. This violent, cynical and visually stunning film introduced The Man with No Name, the anti-heroic gunslinger for whom money is the only motivation and the villains are merely obstacles to be removed. Many later films followed this formula of the lone gunman in pursuit of money to the exclusion of all else. Leone's unique style, artistic camera angles, extension of time and raw, explosive violence presented a skewed view of the West, making his film different from any earlier Western.
If Sergio Leone defined the style of the Spaghetti Western, Morricone invented its music. His hoof beat rhythms, whistling themes, and the use of the human voice as an instrument became the standard for the scores to follow. Morricone's simple, haunting tunes did more than merely fill the gaps between passages of dialogue. They became an audible presence -- punctuating action, accelerating a chase scene, or driving a showdown to its conclusion.

La destinazione (2000) By Piero sanna – Italian with English subtitles
Friday, May 9, 2008 @ 7:00 PM
Costantino, a fellow trainee from Sardinia and, over time, the two young men talk about their hometowns. The course ends and Emilio finds that his destination is Colores, a town in the heart of the Barbagia region of Sardinia where his work will consist mostly in patrols and prevention. He finds this part of Sardinia completely different from the coastal areas described to him by Costantino. Colores is a town where the “old ways” are still the “good”, indeed the only way of doing things.
One day a man is killed right in front of his son, Efisio. The little boy recognises his father’s killer; it is Cortes. Emilio and his colleagues are called in to investigate, find Cortes and bring him to justice. Emilio talks to Efisio and finds that they have a lot in common as Emilio’s father is also dead. The carabinieri try to persuade Efisio’s mother that her son should “break ranks” and testify in court and say how he saw Cortes kill his father.
In the meantime, Emilio meets a young woman from the town called Giacomina and after winning over her initial reluctance and suspicions towards him, the stranger in town, they begin a relationship. Cortes is finally captured and brought to trial, but is found not guilty because the jury doubt Efisio’s testimony. Emilio sees all his efforts have come to nothing and becomes very depressed and disillusioned, this state of mind is not helped by the fact that his relationship with Giacomina is coming apart. On Good Friday, Efisio is found hanging in the pig-sty and this tragedy is the final straw for Emilio who realises nothing will ever change in that part of the world and leaves for a new destination.

Warwick's Bookstore
7812 Girard Avenue, La Jolla, CA 92037
The bestselling author of Too Much Tuscan Sun, Dario Castagno will be at Warwick's to discuss and sign his new book, A Day In Tuscany.
This charming and warmly funny sequel picks up where Dario Castagno´s much loved memoir Too Much Tuscan Sun leaves off - quite literally, as the tour guide-turned-author returns from his first American book tour. After three hectic months of pingponging across America, Dario wakes up back in his beloved Chianti and decides to spend the day refreshing himself with its sights, reacquainting himself with its rhythms, and reconnecting with the irresistible cast of characters who people his life, from herb-collecting grannies and wizard-like storytellers, to the daring female Palio jockey and the gently batty “maestro” in his trailer. They trigger in him a flood of memories of this dazzling land - of wars ancient and modern, of heroes and ghosts, lovers and legends - as well as comic recollections of his own misadventures as a fireman, hot-air balloon entrepreneur, soccer hopeful, ardent oenophile, and - of course - professional guide to a succession of wonderfully eclectic American tourists. Readers who loved Too Much Tuscan Sun will relish the opportunity to spend more brilliant, sunlit days in Dario Castagno´s corner of the world. New readers should pour themselves a glass of Chianti Classico, sit back, and prepare to be transported to a place where everyday life is still infused with magic.

FIAMMA FUMANA in concert at: AcousticMusicSanDiego.com
Fiamma Fumana, from Italy, play Northern Italian traditional music with a contemporary attitude and new beats. Fiamma is Italian for "flame" = the energy of the present. Fumana means "fog" or "mist" = the mysterious resilience of the past. A predominantly female ensemble, this group is on a continuing mission to remember what is today being forgotten in their local culture and bring the songs to pop music. A cummulative sound that mixes "club beats and folk virtuosity... credible in both dance clubs and coffeehouses," touts j.poet at Tower Pulse!
