Program Highlights
Tsofiut (Scouting)
At Camp Shomria the campers learn how to build and create using the raw materials that the forest provides. Tsofiut includes building shelters in the woods, identifying edible plants, and learning nature survival skills. By giving campers the opportunity to feel empowered in nature, Tsofiut also facilitates the development of a deeper understanding of the natural world and our place in it.
Community Service
Campers engage in community service projects in Liberty, New York. Campers working with local youth, paint murals, perform in plays, build playgrounds and plant gardens throughout the village. This interaction allows them to feel the benefits of contributing to their summer community, builds confidence, and allows them to explore issues in Tikkun Olam.
Jewish Programming and Education
Shabbat is observed every Friday evening until Saturday afternoon with special activities and a special schedule. Every Friday, all the children dress in white, hug, and wish each other "Shabbat Shalom." This is followed by a special assembly, a special "shira", or song time, a candle-lighting ceremony and personalized blessings for the bread and "wine." While Shabbat is a cornerstone of Camp Shomria's Jewish educational programming, the activities the kids undergo with their peers throughout the week are its heart. Every day is packed with activities that engage with campers' self-identities and allow them to explore areas of ethics and philosophy that are new to them in ways they understand and find personally fulfilling. The Jewish components of these activities are powerful and inspiring.
