KGO Radio has to be the most generous and community-minded radio station, not only in the San Francisco Bay Area, but in the United States.

KGO radio generously raises funds for a variety of causes and 100% of the money raised goes to the cause.  Of course, the one near and dear to our hearts is the KGO Radio Thanks giving charity Drive.  This is held from the first Sunday in November and continues through the month.  The Thanksgiving Charity Drive funds four organizations: St. Anthony's in San Francisco, Sacred Heart Community Center in San Jose, St Vincent de Paul in Oakland and Fresh Start Walnut Creek.

We would like to thank Mickey Luckoff, General Manager of KGO, Sue Muzzin, Marketing Director and all of the Marketing staff, who work so hard on the Thanksgiving Charity Drive.

The kind and generous KGO listeners also have our thanks and gratitude. Many of you have become volunteers, friends, and great supporters of Fresh Start Walnut Creek.

The support of the following Walnut Creek businesses and Foundations have been so important to our success:

First Republic Bank

We couldn't do it without you!  Our thanks and gratitude to Scott, Kathleen, Debbie, Cea and everyone who provides us with such great customer service and support.

The Kaiser Volunteers and Kaiser Hospital have honored us for three years with donations and awards for our work in the community.  We appreciate the honor and the association with Kaiser.  Thank you.

Cindy Lawrence, of Lawrence Volvo in Walnut Creek, stepped in to befriend and personally assist a couple who have been homeless in Walnut Creek for a long time. Cindy called Fresh Start when she met this couple and we worked together to find housing and health care for them.

Cindy’s personal involvement was the magic that made the difference in the decisions that this couple made.  She took the time to care and counsel two people she did not know.  Now, she has experienced first hand what it takes to get someone off the streets and into housing. which includes a lot of  love, care and time.  Cindy also has made two good friends and the gratitude of all at Fresh Start.

PMI of Walnut Creek

Denise Vickers and The Walnut Creek Baking Company have supported Fresh Start from the beginning...of both Fresh Start and The Walnut Creek Baking Company.  We are the lucky beneficiary of their day-old pastries and cakes.  Fresh Start participants enjoy a hot cup of coffee and a hot scone or muffin, courtesy of Denise and everyone at the Walnut Creek Baking Company.  Thank you for the goodies - and your friendship.

The following Foundations have contributed to Fresh Start and in doing so, strengthed our organization and helped us serve more people:

The Firedoll Foundation
The Thomas J. Long Foundation
The Safeway Foundation
The Y&H Soda Foundation
PG&E Employees
Chevron Employees

Holly Near & Ronnie Gilbert support Fresh Start

In February of 2005 Fresh Start friends and supporters were fortunate to have Holly Near appear for us in Walnut Creek.  Holly performed a “Talk Sing" which included stories about her life, her career, political commentary and a lot of music.  As always, Holly Near sang her heart out and had everyone laughing and crying as she described the politics of the day and told stories.  Holly invited and challenged us to step out and participate in social and political activism, even if it is just one thing, go out and do it.  Find something that you care about and ACT.  Thank you, Holly for a memorable day and inspiring talk, which many of us considered a very gentle “call to action."

Ronnie Gilbert was invited to introduce Holly and she graciously accepted.  Ronnie described hearing about Holly for the first time when her daughter showed her an album of Holly’s, dedicated to Ronnie.  Ronnie and Holly met and the rest was history.  Their many appearances together over the years have always been one of the greatest treats for those of us who love their music.   Many of you will recall Ronnie’s one-woman show in 2994, performed for Fresh Start:  “A Radical Life with Song."  And what a life it is.  Thank you, Ronnie, for your generosity, inspiration and lifetime of activism.

We are fortunate to be the organization that benefits from the talent and care of the Creek Kids and their families and friends.  We are proud and grateful to bea part of this incredible and innovative organization.   You all have our love and gratitude.

(Go to our Photo Gallery to see the pictures of Creek Kids good work)

Creek Kids is a non-profit made up of concerned and hopeful Walnut Creek children and teens who believe their time, creativity and effort can make a difference in the world.  Borne out of two young children's concern over one local homeless man's well being, the project is growing go involve many local scout troops, elementary schools and other community organizations.  It is a project to support and care for children, adults and families in need both locally and internationally.

Children show their vitality and their imaginations through their art work.  Giving their artwork away to loved one's and seeing their creations appreciated and displayed is a meaningful way for children to share themselves and their love.

The inspired young children of CKC create art while the older children use this art to create stationery for other to enjoy and share.  All proceeds are used to purchase necessary equipment and supplies for organizations of the Creek Kids' choosing.  Since CKC's beginning in 2004, its main focus ha been to support local people without homes.

The Walnut Creek Newcomers are a group of glorious women who serve the Walnut Creek Communty to help people new to our area make new friends and get involved in new activities.  Fresh Start is fortunate that this wonderful group has set aside time, once a month, to bring lunch to Fresh Start.  They have made many new and appreciative friends here.  Everyone looks forward to the last Tuesday of the month when "The Mom Food" arrives!  If you are interested in joining the Walnut Creek Newcomers you can click on the link above to go to their website or you can give one of these women a call: Mindy Carson 925-279-2295, Carroll Brooks 925-935-7887, or after September 1 our Membership Chairperson Vinita Ramsay 925-465-4961.  Tell them their friends at Fresh Start sent you!

“Through the spirit of God’s love and guidance, we provide food, shelter
and moral support to people in need beyond the parish.”

-mission statement, St Timothy’s Outreach Team

With this statement, our Outreach Team has stayed focused on people’s needs in the world at large. Our efforts stretch from the global community to the towns in our little section of the San Ramon Valley. Through grants, liaisons, physical and moral support, we try to become involved in, and lessen, the burdens of those whose struggles are beyond their ability to cope.

St. Anselm's Episcopal Church

T.A.P.S. has been very good to Fresh Start and all of our participants.  In 2005 T.A.P.S. gave us the merriest Christmas!  In 2006 a U-Haul arrived one day and suddenly we had gorgeous out door furniture!  It was as if another room had been added to the St. Paul's Fellowship house.  Everyone enjoys sitting outside to have breakfast, lunch or just to have coffee or talk with a friend.  Thank you, T.A.P.S.

TAPS was created from the desire to partner high school girls and their parents in community volunteerism. Founded by Melanie Knoth English and co-founded by Christy Deibert, Robson English, Rhonda Montgomery, and Cindy Sakai, on February 25, 2002, TAPS welcomed seventeen teens and their parents as Charter Members. TAPS has grown to sixty-seven (67) teens and a Sustainer/alumnae group.
