Food Bank of West Central Texas

BackPacks for kids Program

HELPING FIGHT HUNGER in the Big Country Since 1984...

On December 11, 2007, the Food Bank launched a new program at College Heights Elementary. School personnel identify chronically hungry children who are in jeopardy of being without adequate food over the weekend. College Heights was chosen because over 95% of the children receive free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. On Friday afternoons these children pick up an ordinary backpack filled with kid-friendly foods. On Monday morning, they return the backpack to be filled again for the next weekend. There is no stigma attached to receiving food because the other children don’t realize that the backpacks contain food. Thirty children are participating.

The cost involved with the program is about $3.50 per child per week during the school year – or about $150.
