First Step Initiative focuses on empowerment by "putting individuals in a position to build their own life." It accomplishes this through a multi-pronged approach aimed at maximizing effectiveness:
We are available
First Step Initiative provides access to collateral free loans ranging in size from $50-150 to start and grow businesses. Although the loans are generally risk free (repayments rates range from 95-98 percent); many for-profit lenders are reluctant to make these due to their low profit margin.
We are affordable
The interest rate for a First Step Initiative loan is only 2.5 percent per month, contrasted by the rates of local "money lenders," who regularly charge between 120 and 300 percent. By keeping overhead low, the organization is able to redistribute loan payments to others in need and extending the value of the investment even more.
We foster sustainable development
First Step Initiative also recognizes that credit is just one of the diverse services that poor people need to improve their lives. To further long-term results, loan recipients work in groups of ten, forming supportive and nurturing networks. These forums also offer participants advice from successful entrepreneurs on topics including best business practices, health and nutrition, improving living conditions, and the importance of educating children.
We are experienced
Through a successful pilot project with just $3,000, 60-women and their families are already on the road to self-sufficiency thanks to First Step Initiative staff.
We capitalize on our resources
The leadership of First Step Initiative is composed of people who are from the Congo , speak the language, understand the culture, and can work through local politics. Financial functions are handled by Grand Central Charity, an umbrella 501(c)3 well-versed in loan administration.
