Bishop Howe’s retirement
At the Standing Committee meeting Sept. 18, Bishop Barry R. Howe asked committee members to assume their canonical responsibility of searching for the next bishop of the Diocese of West Missouri. The process normally takes between 12 and 18 months before the ordination/consecration of a new bishop. While the Standing Committee is in charge of the search process, all members of the diocese will have an opportunity to be involved through surveys and questions-and-answer opportunities.
Although a new bishop will be elected at November 2010’s Eighth Annual Gathering and 121st Annual Diocesan Convention, Howe will keep his position until the consecration of the new bishop, which usually occurs several months after the election.
Howe said, “Until then, I will continue to minister as your bishop to the best of my ability and with the grace of the Lord. I believe it is time for the diocese to have new, fresh and younger leadership. I will be 67 in November, and I am in my 43 rd year of ordained ministry. Following my resignation, I will seek to be helpful in a more reduced capacity.”
