A Day at the Thrift Shop
- Groups could sponsor one day a month at the Thrift Shop (e.g., every first Friday of the month). The group would help receive donations, sort donations, put donations out, help customers etc. A group could also help us pickup donations. Volunteers could change from month to month depending on the group’s needs.
Assorted Kits
- Groups could create assorted kits for residents at the shelter (e.g., birthdays, home repair, etc.). For example, a birthday kit could contain napkins, plates, cake mix, icing, candles, balloons, and streamers. When a resident has a birthday all of the supplies are already assembled.
Drives for Much Needed Items
-Friends of the Family constantly needs certain items replenished. These items include (but are not limited to) diapers, non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, towels, bedding, and sweat suits (both adult and child sizes). Groups could do a drive for some of these items and deliver the items to our office.
Field Day for Children at the Shelter
- A group could give children at the shelter an opportunity to gain sports skills. Some activities could include a softball game, obstacle course, or a soccer day camp, etc. Groups would be responsible for collecting the necessary materials, offering instruction, and assisting with the activities.
Meal in a Box
-Assembling all of the ingredients for a meal, (excluding perishable items) could save a busy mother time when preparing a healthy meal for her children. A meal could consist of items such as hamburger helper, soup starter, a can of vegtables, brownie mix, etc.
One-Day Maintenance Project
-Groups could assist with a maintenance project at one of FOF's locations. Projects could include painting a meeting room, assisting with maintaining the outside of the office, etc.
Outings with Children at the Shelter
-About once a week the children at the shelter go on field trips in the Denton area. Groups could assist with garnering passes for activities and/or accompanying the group. Suggested activities include lunch at Chuck E. Cheese's, bowling, going to the movies, etc.
Pampering for Shelter Residents
-Groups could arrange for shelter residents to receive manicures, pedicures, facials, etc. Many of the residents are searching for a job so some could use the help of a beauty consultant as well. Perhaps a group could create a selection of beauty products for future residents to use. This could include a basket with hair ribbons, brushes, combs, books on styling, etc.
Professional Developments
-Companies could offer clients assistance with jobs related skills to aid our clients in obtaining jobs. Activities could include interview practice, job shadowing, resume writing, etc.
Relationship Violence Awareness Month
-October is Relationship Violence Awareness Month. FOF will hold the annual Candlelight Vigil during October. This evening of survivor stories, poetry, and music is held in memory of victims and in celebration of survivors of relationship violence. Volunteers are needed to help plan and coordinate this event.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
-April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The goal of activities planned for April is to educate the public about how prevalent a problem sexual assault is and how community members can protect themselves. Activities vary but include a march, community education, and a candlelight vigil. Volunteers are needed to help increase awareness.
Third Party Events
-Groups who sponsor third party events on behalf of FOF not only help raise much needed funds but they also help raise awareness of our services. Events could include a 5K walk, dinner, golf tournament, etc.
