My gut says that most of us, myself included, are paralyzed by not only the gun violence, but the violent culture we live in. We as a nation are in a war right now in two countries we do not understand, hundreds of people are being shot and killed on our streets and in homes throughout the city, and the hundreds of thousands of media images we are saturated with each day numb us to violence as a method to persuade. I think we take for granted that there will be violence and killing and suffering every day, and so accept it as part of our life together. So the killing in southwest Philadelphia and around the city is the flip side of the same coin of violence that we perpetuate through our government's strong arm tactics and through the persuasive messages that are sent through our televisions, videos and film. Peace is a way that must begin individually, and communally with neighborhoods, religious groups and political organizations committing themselves to nonviolence on every level.
