June 7, 2004 - Free Harvard tuition to low income families

Harvard is offering free tuition for students that have a family income below $40,000. If you are a mentor or have nieces and nephews who might be interested, please give them this information. If you know anyone/family earning less than $40K with a brilliant child near ready for college, please pass this along.

Harvard's Tuition Announcement Highlights Failure of Prestigious Universities to Enroll Low-Income Students, March 1, 2004

Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When only 10 percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in lower half the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution." This initiative puts severe pressure on other well-endowed colleges and universities to adopt similar measures. Some commentators believe that Harvard's announcement was made in response to Princeton University's decision six years ago to eliminate all tuition charges for families earning less than $40,000 (adjusted annually to take inflation into account) and its subsequent decision three years later to substitute all student loans with outright grants.

The Harvard announcement indicates that the Princeton plan has had some success in drawing to Princeton some of the high-achieving, low-income students who typically went to Harvard. Each year The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education gathers figures from the U.S. Department of Education relating to the percentage of students at the nation's leading colleges and universities who receive federal financial assistance under the Pell Grant program for low-income students. These figures provide a good measure of the institution's relative success in enrolling students from the bottom economic sector of the nation's families.

June 7, 2004 - Presidential Freedom Scholarships for student community service

[Editor's note: These scholarships offer an excellent opportunity to recognize students whose community service builds the global community or makes the global-local link!]

From Youth Service America's National Service Briefing:

Two students from every high school in the United States are eligible to receive $1,000 Presidential Freedom Scholarships in recognition of their outstanding service to the community. The annual college scholarship program, which will award up to eight thousand scholarships, is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service's Learn and Serve America (http://learnandserve.org) program. The program itself provides half of the award, which must be matched with $500 from a community organization, civic group, or business and secured for the student by his or her high school. Students must meet the following eligibility requirements: be a high school junior or senior during the 2003-2004 academic year; have contributed at least one hundred hours of community service within the twelve months prior to applying; be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; attend a public, private, charter, or parochial school located within one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, a U.S. territory, tribal unit, or Department of Defense school; and plan to attend an eligible institution of higher education in the U.S. For more information, visit: http://www.nationalservice.org/scholarships. The deadline: July 16, 2004.

Deadline: June 11, 2004

Mercedes-Benz USA has launched a national scholarship program to provide educational assistance to students who will be the first in their families to attend college. December 12, 2003. - Citiwide Receives 30 Donated Computers from the American Psychological Association

Citiwide staff picked up 30 donated Windows 98 computers from the American Psychological Association today. These computers will be distributed for free home use by elementary school students at Citiwide's partner school, Elsie Whitlow-Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School. Citiwide and Stokes School share the belief that education is the key to personal and community empowerment.

Students who receive donated computers from Citiwide will also receive free computer training and academic instruction via Citiwide's after-school program. The goal of this after-school program is to bring strongly expanded learning opportunities to students who might otherwise not have these opportunities. The intended outcome of this project is higher academic achievement for all students at Stokes School.

After-school instruction will be provided by Lifelong Learning Coach Phil Shapiro and Academic Intern Byron Rey, a senior at Maya Angelou Public Charter School with strong skills in technology, along with volunteers and Citiwide staff.

December 9, 2003 - Citiwide Participates in Federal Computers For Learning Initiative

Citiwide Computer Training Center has registered as an educational nonprofit organization on the Computers For Learning web site.

Computers For Learning is a Federal initiative, established in 1996 via Executive Order 12999 from the White House, which has distributed thousands of surplus Federal computers to schools and educational nonprofit organizations. In the past, surplus Federal computers were stored in large warehouses. Now they're being put to use in our nation's schools and educational nonprofit organizations, serving important community needs.

The Computers For Learning initiative has benefitted other organizations in our neighborhood, which Citiwide applauds.

In December, 2003, the Computers For Learning web site started an expansion to include private companies who would like to distribute their surplus computers. This is an excellent development to help bridge the digital divide. Citiwide will continue to participate in this initiative and will share further news and outcomes here on the Citiwide web site.

September 24, 2003 - Summer Program Success, College Summit Training, and New English Conversation Classes at Citiwide

Lots has been happening at Citiwide Computer Training Center in the past few weeks. Citiwide finished up its summer program for elementary school children. The culmination of the summer program was a music video we made with the children, with some of them performing, some of them shooting the video and some of them in charge of the microphone and audio. If you have a high-speed Internet connection, you can view the video by clicking here. You will need QuickTime 6 to view this video. Click here to download QuickTime for free.

Can you believe the 5th-grade student playing guitar in this video never played guitar before performing in this video? She has a real talent for quickly learning new musical instruments.

The summer program also had lots of computer activities, swimming, judo and field trips to area museums, embassies and parks. It was sad saying goodbye to the children at the end of the summer, but some of them may be back next year.

In other news, in early September Citiwide rented out its computer lab for a staff training for a DC-area nonprofit, College Summit, that assists high school students to get into college. This training included a person from Chicago who joined in via speakerphone. The training progressed well with our new laptop, projector and cable-modem Internet connection.

Citiwide also recently launched a free English conversation class on Thursday evenings from 7 pm to 8:30 pm in room AG-32 in the Woodner Building at 3636 16th St. (this room is very near the leasing office in the building. After you enter the building walk down the steps, turn right at the hallway, walk all the way down towards the leasing office. AG-32 is one of the last rooms on your right.) This class uses human-interest news stories to help adults learn pronunciation, vocabulary and English expressions. The class has a few open slots if you know anyone who would like to attend. Talk to Phil at Citiwide if you'd like to attend. (202) 667-3719. We might be running a morning or afternoon session of this class, too, if there is sufficient interest. Current students hail from Ethiopia, Senegal, Bolivia and El Salvador. The class is run informally with students participating at the level, which they're most comfortable.

June 24, 2003 - Citiwide Kicks Hunger

Each year, 85% of the 16 million children who receive free or reduced-price lunches during the school year are at risk of going hungry during the summer months. To help alleviate this problem, Sodexho USA provides summer meals through its Feeding Our Future program to 11 major cities in the US and the District of Columbia. To launch Feeding Our Future, and to bring awareness to summer lunch programs in Washington, DC, Sodexho USA, Citiwide Computer Training Center, and a host of other community organizations celebrated with the Mayor at a community picnic and a celebrity "Kick Hunger" kickball game.

To draw attention to this year's summer food programs in the District, Mayor Anthony Williams captained a kick ball event, which took place at the Parks and Recreational Center, 3149 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20010. A select members of the DC City Council and leaders of partnering organizations, as well as selected youth from the community, filled the roster of attendees to the events. Sodexho USA is also recruited other professional athletes and local celebrities who participated in the event. The event was short but very exciting. During the game a picnic style lunch was served to all children and participants for free.
