Job Description: Volunteer Position
Interns plan, organize and lead science activities in the Museum’s FETCH! Lab™, the Science Roadshow, and during Museum events and programs. Activities are based on the FETCH! curriculum developed by WGBH for popular PBS program of the same name. The FETCH! Lab™ is a Museum exhibit based on the program and the Science Roadshow is a traveling program based on the FETCH! curriculum which is goes to schools, organizations and groups in the region.
Duties
The Education intern directs kids ages 3 – 10 and their families in one (or more) science activities, working either one-on-one or in small groups. This involves:
- Planning and organizing weekly activities
- Plan and organize activities to be integrated into Museum programs and special events.
- Providing basic instructions
- Helping kids to share their ideas about how things work
- Asking questions and encouraging kids to try more in-depth experimentation
- Opening and closing the Lab
- Working with junior volunteer staff members (ages 11 – 13)
- Assisting with Summer Drop-in Days, a series of themed mini events held each summer. Summer Drop-ins mix presentations and performances with hands-on art and science activties. (summer only)
- Assist the Museum’s teaching staff with the Science Roadshow programs, events and outreach programs and Museum classes.
Position requirements
- Excellent communication skills.
- Flexibility to lead and develop projects in a variety of settings
- Able to work in a fun environment with parents, children and Museum staff
