Play is a life long activity and the foundation for all formal education; it supports and courages children's emotional, physical, cognitive, and social development. When planning play opportunities, it is important to take into consideration a wide range of abilities and to consider "hidden" disabilities such as autism. Participants will learn why it is important to integrate a variety of play experiences into the lives of every child.
Participants will learn:
• The characteristics of play
• The safeguards of play
• Why play is important
• The different types of play, and some of the skills developed through each type.
*Making "Senses" of the World: Attention, Learning, & the Senses
• May 21, 2008
• 6:30-8:30 pm
• $60
• Presenter: Ingrid M. Kanics, OTR/L. Center for Creative Play
How do we learn to pay attention? How do we teach children attention skills so they can be sucessful? The answer lies in our seven senses. This workshop will discuss each of the senses and how they are processed in the brain, and how that connects to attention and learning. Participants will leave with a new understanding of how their children learn about the world and how they use their sense to be successful in everyday situations.
Participants will learn:
• The definition of each of the seven senses
• A simple understanding of how each sense is processed in the brain
• How each sense is connected to playing attention
• How each sense can be used to support learning
• Strategies for how to apply information from the workshop into their classroom
Both workshops are presented by Ingrid M. Kanics, OTR/L. A recent recipient of the Pennsylvania and the American Occupational Therapy Association's Award for her work in "Innovative Indoor Play and Sensory Motor Environments," Ingrid has presented at national conferences for NAEYC, Parents-as-Teachers, and the Association of Children's Museums. Her presentations are practical, informative, and leave participants motivated to make a difference and armed with tools to do so.
