First time students complete a series of drawing projects designed to lead from black & white contour drawing to pencil shading to working with color in pastel, prismacolor, watercolor and acrylic paints. Emphasis placed on sharpening observational skills while drawing common objects from life. Repeat students encouraged to explore acrylic painting on canvas. Academic instruction in color theory, perspective, texture, line and composition is given. Each student is guided at his/her level but expected to work somewhat independently. A "working atmosphere" fostered through the "love" of art is a PRIORITY. Focus, organizational skills, eye-hand coordination, patience, creating, planning and following through to completion of long-term projects is part of the process. Self-expression and self-acceptance are promoted along with respect for art and artists. Students are expected to complete work with the goal of exhibiting at 2 annual art exhibitions with proper art openings. Certificates are awarded and a scholarship competition is sponsored.
