Three 2006 New Hope winners
New Hope Scholarship
Knowing a good education is so vital in today’s world, CRN has created the New Hope Scholarship. This is a scholarship for deserving, promising Seniors from a shelter or group home who would not otherwise qualify for Georgia’s Hope Scholarship. The scholarships can be used either for college or technical school. Many children from shelters or group homes are good, intelligent, hard working kids. The realities of their lives though make it very difficult for them to maintain a B average. Often moved frequently, changing schools, with too little personal attention from a caring, concerned adult, and all too often without the basic tools (notebooks, pens, calculators, bookbags, etc.), these kids face an uphill battle attempting to achieve academic success. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a personal letter from the child explaining why he should be chosen, a recommendation from a teacher or shelter staff, their high school records and extra-curricular activities, and a personal interview. Two Scholarships were awarded in 2005, and six were awarded in 2006. We are thrilled that Publix Supermarkets will be collecting Santa Dollars this Holiday Season to help the New Hope Scholarship reach even more people next year.. CRN hopes to continually grow this program so that more kids will have the chance for a better education and a real shot at the American Dream. So if you like the idea, and want to help, give us a call.
Jim with 2006 New Hope Scholarship winner Gino Payne at this year's Celebrate the Children Ball. Gino with his twin brother Mario, participated in Project One on One for four years. Here's a short blurb about Gino: Started at Perimeter College this summer and will be continuing this fall. He is a resident of Comprehensive Family and Health Services (CFHS). He will be studying Psychology and wants to be a social worker with homeless and disadvantaged youths. Gino attributes much of his motivation to succeed to CFHS director Dr. Chapman and the years he participated in CRN’s Project One on One. His goal is to empower students through Knowledge.
This picture taken in 1998 shows a much younger and shorter Gino Payne, his brother Mario (now an MP serving in Iraq) and Jim at a picnic -basketball outing. Project One on One not only emphasizes academics, but also enjoyable activities that help Mentors and students to bond. |
