SPANISH LITERACY PROGRAM

WHY DOES OUR COMMUNITY NEED SPANISH LITERACY?

For a number of reasons, many of our students didn’t have the opportunity to learn basic Spanish Literacy in their home country…
  1. Economic Reasons:  Some left school in order to work and support their family.
  2. Cultural Reasons:  In some smaller towns in Latin American women traditionally don’t go to school.
  3. Political Reasons:  In many of our students' countries there is no adequate federal funding for education, leaving many communities without schools. Also, in regions that experience political violence, students may have left schools where they were confronted with violent or authoritarian teachers.
We believe literacy is a basic human right.  Alfa exists to give students the tools they need to learn English and participate in American society and their native country’s society.

WHAT WE DO
  • We offer 3 levels of basic Spanish Literacy.
  • All our classes are taught by volunteers.
  • Our students receive one on one tutoring.
  • Students start by learning the alphabet and go on to construct full sentences.
  • We teach grammar, spelling and basic mathematics.

WHAT WE’D LIKE TO DO IF WE HAD MORE RESOURCES

  • Federal funding is only allocated to Spanish Literacy in so far as it is a necessary step learning English.  We would like to receive funds in order to hire a paid teacher.  Limited space and funds prevent us from opening more advanced levels of Spanish literacy.
  • We would like to give students the option to continue to become more literate in their native language and offer more advanced classes in Spanish literature and writing.
  • We would like to be able to provide an accredited equivalency certificate equal to an Elementary School diploma.
