REP. ELLISON TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE WITH STUDENT GROUPS WRONGFULLY LABELED AS TERRORISM THREATS

State Representative Keith Ellison will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Monday, March 10 in Room 200 of the State Office Building to protest the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office labeling the student organizations Students Against War, Anti-Racist Action, and Arise! as potential terrorist threats.

During a presentation on "Understanding Terrorism in Minnesota at the Governor's Emergency Management Conference on March 4, Capt. Bill Chandler of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said the groups were among the extremist organizations currently operating in Minnesota and urged Minnesota emergency management personnel to be aware of the potential threat they posed.

"The inclusion of these groups on the suspected terror list is reminiscent of the FBI's Counter Intelligence Program in which peaceful advocates such as Dr. Martin Luther King and others were spied on, harassed, and undermined by the FBI," Ellison said. "These organization wish to be removed from any list of suspected terrorists, and to express their outrage with this erroneous characterization."
